Hugo Resende graduated as an Aeronautical Engineer at Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica – ITA. He got his Master at ITA in Aeronautical Engineering, and finished his Ph.D. at Stanford University, USA, also in Aeronautical Engineering.
Hugo started at Embraer S.A. in January 1986 and stayed there until September 2011. He worked 10 years as an product development engineer. After that, he was responsible for the Applied Research area of Embraer, until 2005 when he became the company Chief Scientist. In 2008 he moved to the Commercial Aviation business unit of Embraer.
Hugo went to Vale S.A. in October 2011 and this job mission was “to turn research projects into innovative and sustainable businesses”.
Hugo became in January 2014 the Director of the Lightweight Structures Laboratory of Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas. The lab performs research in the development on lightweight structures, centered on composite materials and advanced joining methods for metallic materials. The main focus right now is on the aerospace industry, but the intention is to include other industrial sectors, such as automotive and petroleum & gas. Its facilities started operations on May 2014.
Hugo has been a Board Member of ANPEI (Associação Nacional de P,D&E das Empresas Inovadoras) since May 2002. In 2004 he was elected Vice-President, and in 2006 he became President. ANPEI is a NGO that assembles the Brazilian companies that do R&D as an essential part of their innovation strategy.
